New Zealand citizenship normally requires 1,350 days of qualifying presence over the five years before application.

Who it applies to

Applicants reviewing the residence-based citizenship presence requirement.

The rule

Each of the five twelve-month portions must also meet 240 days. Qualifying resident status matters, so a total calculated only from recorded visits cannot establish eligibility.

Counting the days

Recorded arrival and departure dates count; missing trips are not inferred.

  1. Choose the date through which you want to count, then add your recorded visits.
  2. Use the counting convention above. Overlapping recorded dates in the relevant region are counted only once.
  3. Read the result alongside the conditions. Missing records and other eligibility requirements are not inferred from a total.

Common misconceptions

“A counter result is the same as permission or eligibility.”

The counter measures recorded dates. Your actual permission, status and other conditions remain separate.

“A new calendar year resets this counter.”

This is a rolling window. Dates leave the window as time moves forward.
