An extended absence can prevent renewal or extension of an Italian residence permit. The applicable period depends on permit duration.
The rule
The six-month reminder is relevant to shorter permits. Permits valid for at least two years instead use half their validity period; military duties and serious documented reasons can provide exceptions. This is not a universal six-month expiry rule.
Counting the days
For each recorded absence, the reminder date is the departure date plus six calendar months. The numerical absence total excludes departure and return dates. This counter shows the recorded absence whose reminder date is nearest.
